1 dead and 2 missing after North Caucasus avalanche

Jan. 18 (UPI) — Russian emergency officials said one person has died and two are still missing after an avalanche struck a ski trail in the North Caucasus region on Monday.

“The whereabouts of two people are being established,” a source from the press service of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations told TASS.

Khadzhi-Murat Marshankulov, president of the “Dombai” Alpine Skiing and Snowboard Federation, was killed in the avalanche, his son Shamil told the Russian news agency.

Crews suspended search operations Monday for bad weather at the site in the Karachay-Cherkessia region of southern Russia. The avalanche occurred around 1:30 p.m.

The avalanche hit a piste in the settlement of Dombai on Mount Mussa-Achitara. Two ski equipment rental trailers were buried under snow and a cafe was also damaged, authorities said.

Another avalanche killed three people earlier this month at a ski resort in the city of Norilisk in arctic Russia.
